New air flow meter

I've been having problems with my 1994 Micra, 998cc. Basically a few weeks ago I was driving down a motorway at about 75 mph and the car started juddering like it was about to stall (but obviously because of the speed I was doing there was no reason why it should stall). It did this for a few minutes and finally the engine cut out completely. I turned the engine off, then on again, and it was still a bit funny, so I turned it off again then on again and it seemed to be ok (I drove for another 8 miles-ish although I was driving at about 45/50 mph now as I was behind someone very slow and didn't want to overtake them incase it cut out again).

I thought it was just a one off as I later drove back home and it was fine. Then about a week later it happened again on my way to work (this time at about 60ish mph) and twice on the way back. I've taken it to a garage (nissan specialists) and they've said they're not 100% sure, but they think it's the air flow meter. Their advice was to carry on driving until it completely goes so they can be sure that's what it is. However, I don't consider my car safe to drive right now. Apparently I need a new air flow meter chamber. I was quoted £400 for a new one, £300 for a remanufactured one and told I could possibly get one from scrap for a lot cheaper.

From doing a search here, people seem to have solved similar problems by resoldering the throttle body. There's no way I'd want to risk it myself, as I know nothing about cars. Do you think it's worth asking the garage to do?

Also, what are people's opinions on buying an airflow meter from scrap?

Finally, I'm in a bit of a quandry whether to fix the car at all. I can't really afford to spend much on it, and I'm wondering whether it's throwing good money after bad to spend £400 plus on getting it fixed when I only bought it for £850 a year and a half ago (although to be fair, apart from this problem I've been told it's in very good condition).

ive had this problem for ages now. by all accounts, you will be very lucky to find one in a scrap yard. the phrase 'hens teeth' springs to mind.

That sounds like a distributer problem I had.

The same things happened to me as you just described.
Check the dissy cap and rotor arm for any oxidising and corrosion (It'll be white or maybe white with a little bit of green) and get back to me.
I changed the whole thing though after finding - as micraisok says; a "hens tooth" in the scrap yard.

Btw: I got it all done and dusted a while ago: http://www.micra.org.uk/t10976-spark-plug-problem.html :)

Same thing happened to me. To save yourself some money, borrow a Haines manual from library, follow the instructions to resolder the throttle body from Cisco's website :
http://www.micra.com.au/technical-articles/cg13de-throttle-body-resoldering-guide.php

Its easy to follow the very detailed instructions and shouldn't take more than an hour if you are a novice like I was. Cost about 10 pounds for the materials used.

Take car for test drive or let it idle for an hour ( if you don't feel safe driving it ) and see if it still cuts out. If it does then, like me, I changed the Distributor next. Bought one off the internet breakers for 35 pounds (loads of Micras being breaking up all the time on Ebay) and fitted it following the Haines manual. Worked a treat. But still had to take car to Nissan dealer to adjust the ignition timing ( as suggested in Haines manual ) but this only cost 15 pounds.

All in all, cost about 60 pounds to fix problem but gained a lot of experience and found this forum to boot.
