Mushroom and Cone Air Filters...

A k&n will sound different to say a pipercross filter, or a green cotton one, so they won't sound the same.

k&n don't do a mushroom filter as such, they do the cone and then the more squished cone. HKS do though I'm sure

Will a notice a different sound with the mushroom filter?

A different sound to what? a cone filter? Well if the same manufactuer does both a cone and a mushroom filter, then I would assume no.

However, if it is from 2 different manufacturers, say ak&n cone filter and an HKS mushroom one then you will.

If your after noise though, stick on a £15 universal one.

Thats the thing,
I dont want the noise, I want the performance sound, to give the car a bit of "VROOM!!" without sounding stupid...

How much do panel filter's work out?

Do they fit inside your existing air filter?

The k&n panel filter replaces the existing standard air filter. It sits in the airbox at the back of the engine bay. It gives better filtration and alloys more air into the engine.

I bought Davey Cs custom air intake and after a bit of work got it working really well. Really noticed the difference so if your doing this I would recommend purchasing some extra piping/hosing and getting another air feed to the underside of the airbox (pre filter side) and then down to the front of the engine.

Well I was going to buy the K&N 57i Induction Kit... Worth it?

To start off thats the Typhoon kit, which comes with the relocation kit. The 57i kit doesnt come with that.

What you get there is a cone filter, jubilee clip & a cold air hose. So you would have to purchase all the piping seperate if you wished to relocate it.

I had a k&n cone filter, sold it though and never fitted it to my car. Chrissy has one and it sounds decent on his.

I can't give a comparission as I haven't had both on my car but people do say, if you try the search, that cone filter for noise, panel filter for performance.

you can get a nicer sound just by modding the airbox, and thats with a factory filter, i still aint got round to buying a k&n/green panel filter :(

How? I'm interested in doing this myself. Doesn't seem much point to me in buying a cone filter with no bhp increase if a K&N panel filter with modded airbox will not only sound better, but give better performance too :)

As long as it does not involver drilling big holes...lol

It is by drilling holes. You can drill some holes on the underside of the airbox and it will be louder, or cut off the pipe on the intake section and it would be louder.

Here is some pics of my intake set up that I bought from Davey C and have modified slightly.

nps, dont expect huge amounts of noise doing what i did, if you really want people to hear you coming with the standard airbox maybe you should go for something more .... better .... like scottish-srs setup

im not sure what scottish-sr did, i just sawed the end of my resonator pipe (but before the really thin bit), i think the resonator is there for silencing the induction, so by sawing it off it makes more noise (+ lets more air in)

All I done was buy it off Davey, lol.

But when I got it I made the hole bigger and then pushed the pipe through it and secured it in place. There is just more air getting to the filter.

It gives a nice sound but isn't as noisey as a cone filter. I noticed a definate performance increase though. The car pulls better from lower down and over 5k it just keeps pulling where as before it would kind of die off.

Interesting. I'm not really looking for an obscene level of noise, just a nice combo of improved performance and a slight noise increase.

I'm assuming that sound would be increased if I got a performance backbox/manifold sometime in the future anyway (that would be a looong way in the future though, being a student and a stingy git and all that :) )

Will give the resonator pipe thing a go anyway, looks cheap n easy. Might get around to doing something with the air intake pipe itself eventually like SR has done.

Cheers :)

the hole in the airbox, easy as pie lol i just incresed the normal hole, and put in a bigger pipe :D

It usually takes quite a bit to impress me but I have to admit that although that intake setup looks a bit ghetto, it looks like it should be standard...

Nice one!

Dave

if anyone needs anymore pics... i'l take some of mine... mine might even be coming off soon, dont know what im going 2 be doing 2 the engine :D

run the engine and give it a few rev without the air filter, thats the sound i want :D

this looks sweet...

ALSO! why is it when my mate revs his Escort with an air filter, its really beefy, yet when i rev mine its quiet, only loud when im actully driving...:S
