sounds like your best way would be a tester, there not expensive
basically what franks saying is as you turn the crank by hand (or ratchet etc) you should feel 4 compressions per revolution, in not then somthings wrong, another method im sure frank has used is to put it in gear and push it on the flat, you should feel the compressions as your pushing it.
but i guess the definative way of testing is a compression tester
