micra k12 timing stretch

jUst diagnosed the dreaded timing chain stretch on my wifes micra 2003.The car isnt worth much so im looking to do it as cheaply as possible or preferably nothing.
Scouring the net I have come across mention of repositioning the cam sensor to bring it back into phase by enlarging its mounting hole,as anybody on the forums gone down this route

Thanks for the link frank.
ive gotten around to having a check on the micras chain and timing bringing no1 up on compression. With the two orange marks visible and the crank tdc mark aligned. The exhaust sprocket lines up but the intake is one tooth off shown in the pictures, the vvt is in the retarded position
I came across this link http://www.euretechblog.ie/2015/11/permanently-lit-nissan-micra-engine_13.html checking chain stretch which comes back as 70.3 mm saying its alright yet the tensioner plunger is out at 20mm.

Sorry for hijacking the thread , Frank can you check tensioner pad protrusion by just removing the rocker cover on the k12?

not a single stump like the coilpack k11 but a series of slots then chris, is that the nearside end of the inlet cam ?
and i dont know tbh ek10

yes its the nearside frank
and can you see any way of advancing the sensor mate ?
its no wonder the ecu is flagging codes with a sensor ring of such a small diameter ! the chain only needs to stretch a couple of mm and that sensor will be signaling a 10 deg+ error (especially on that VVL inlet cam)

I've opted to go the new timing chain route.Comparing the new and old chain its stretched by a full link.ouch no wonder the engine was running like an asthmatic, really sloppy on nissans part for 58k
The kit doesn't include the vvt pulley, and i don't have a compressor,or at least not one i can transport to advance the pulley, any ideas on ways to advance the pulley without one, work a rounds etc

cheers

ian

wel the vvt isnt wanting to go into the advanced position, tried a tyre wit h45 psi even a carefull bit of tapping and rotating the cam as made no difference,is there a way round this ie taking the cam out or dismantling the vvt?????

I am new to K12's so here's a newbie question... what's the first symptom of a stretched timing chain? and is frequent oil changes with quality oil the way to keep it wear-free ??

I have just picked up a 2004 1.2 as a run-around for £150 whilst the K11 gets the rust sorted and want to keep it for as long as possible.

misfire from a cold start, and code po340 with po300 random misfire on all cylinders, and fuel trims short term at -14%.
Struth somebody needs a slap for designing this engine.Replacing the chain is quite a job needing the gearbox off, even a v8 jag is easier.Any tips for making the job easier, photos maybe?

managed to avoid taking the engine out pushed the gearbox to one side and got the sump out.
No luck with getting the vvt to click into the fully advanced position,so im considering dismantling the vvt to get it into the advanced position or go and buy a new vvt pulley

Thanks for the link frank.

Hi, just reading through K12 timing
all done around work engine runs very well and dam quiet, fuel trims now something sensible
Could you help please. Have 2002 K12 1.2 with stretched chain, when rotating engine chain rides up cog and drops down, tensioner well out. Have removed all usual cross rails top and bottom side plate and alternator. Is there a way of replacing the chain and leaving the inlet vti in place without removing the pesky Lower sump casting ? I saw somewhere that whoever did the job said he would have drilled holes ? Or if this is a non contact engine, is there a kit with a split link and drag the old chain out ? Lastly, as chain has stretched so far, and cog teeth look OK is chain swap only a good thing, or have I missed something. Really appreciate any help to avoid removing the two Lowe sump parts with the dreaded seal stuff. Many thanks, Dave

What about the fuel consumption? With a dreaded chain?

Hello
Got 2 micra K12's one is fine the other starting with the stretch cam chain issue at similar mileage. Checked the chain is stretched. and tried a couple of sensors so it's not that.
I have seen reference to making the Cam sensor adjustable but no how to. do you just slot the fixing hole and rotate it a bit. I assume if you alter the mounting hole it will leak oil.
Only need the car to go another 6 months until the mot up but it's to good to scrap. runs sweet other than throwing the MIl on.

thanks
Andy
