micra idle gone crazy

My sons micra 1000cc K-reg idle speed has gone mad,
when you run at tickover its not noticeable when you
increase the revs it speeds up and down at a fast rate, if you push the throttle down it just labours still going up and down.
Then it might run ok for a few seconds then back to the up and down .
