Keys/Ignition Barrel 2009 1.2 Manual (NOT keyless)

Hi All
Sorry to ask about ignition barrel as there seem to be quite a few posts on the subject but not answering all my questions :)

Yesterday evening my daughter called me after work as she couldnt get her key to turn at all in the ignition. I went along with her spare key and some graphite powder.

Her spare key was the same, it would go in (wasnt smooth had to jiggle a bit) but wouldnt turn.

Eventually after lots of graphite powder and taking the key in/out and jiggling about it turned and we managed to get the car started and home.

At home we stopped the car, took the key out and tried again and it was exactly the same, the key will go in the lock but will not turn at all to even the first position. The steering lock is NOT on at the moment

So I could really do with some advice on what to do/try next (y) and have some questions:

- Firstly is the ignition barrel part of the immobiliser system itself or does it simply house the aerial that detects the chip/transponder in the head of the key ?

- Is the ignition barrel purely physical or is there something electrical that would stop it turning at all with the correct key(s)

- I was thinking of 2 approaches (that assume the issue is the physical barrel) and would like to understand if these would work:

1) somehow remove the "levers" from the barrel so the key (or physically anything that shape) will turn it. This is assuming the issue is the physical mechanism.

2) find a replacement ignition barrel and keys to fit and swap the key heads with the transponders associated with the car from the old keys to the new.
This assumes the steering lock itself is just an aerial for the immobilizer

- I've no idea if either of these will work as I'm not sure how the system works in the Micra, so if anyone can provide any help/guidance I'd really appreciate it

Cheers Dave

Hi All,
I've now got the old steering lock off (Part number N0502823) The only electronic part is the module around the top by the keyhole which I think will be the receiver and antenae associated with the immobilizer. I hope I can just swap this part and use the blades from these new keys along with the key electronics from the original keys so that all that in reality only the physical barrel is changed and the cars CPU knows no different.
Has anyone done this and did it work OK?

I've found one on ebay that comes with 2 keys, door lock and airbag isolation switch

Would be great if someone could confirm this will work OK. At the moment even with the small module still attached to the car it is showing a flashing red key on the right of the dash, is this normal?
I had hoped I could hold the key by the module and then turn the switch that was attached to the bottom of the ignition switch to start the car so I could move it but it does not start, just a flashing red key. Any ideas?

Thanks Dave

Hi All
For anyone with similar issue, swapping the module (8mm bolt) from the front of the original broken barrel and then the Fobs from the original keys onto the replacement blades (single philips screw) worked and car working again
