K11 1l vibe gearbox noise

Hi guys,
This one has got me stumped - any ideas, my daughters "new" 96 Micra makes a loud noise while in 1st gear - 2 to 5 perfect no wine nothing just 1st, this is so loud you can hear it outside the car, I have not checked the gearbox oil level yet, any suggestions

It could be worn teeth on the first gear pinion.

i would pull the speedo cable drive (10mm bolt/long extention+socket) then pour in a half l/oil and see if it is quieter
