Idle RPMs

In the interest of furthering my knowledge of car electronics, I've bought myself a new toy. To check idle RPMs, the manual (if you can call it that) says connect black to "-" battery post, easy enough, and red to "-" coil wire, not so easy. The coil, apparently, is inside the distributor. Haynes says take distributor out and dismantle to get to coil. Obviously, car won't run without a distributor. Anyone had any experience with setting idle RPMs with this sort of meter?

Okay, thanks, that seems to have been it (the blue wire). Thought about trying that but didn't want to start clamping on to any old wire. The LX's idle speed is x 10 which makes it way too high. I tried it on the Super S, with factory tach, and the readings were all over the place. A high of around 60 (X 10) to lows in the teens. Is that because of the factory tach signals? The Super's tach reads about 650 RPMs at warm idle.
