Heat shield fallen off

Last night I heard a scraping and then looking underneath discovered that a shield was hanging off around the front exhaust box. I figure it is some sort of heat shield but can anyone tell me what exactly it is for? How essential it is to the car? Is it expensive to fix this thing?

I took mine off, annoying things. pretty much there incase you intend to park on some very very dry grass haha

Protects the cat for scrapes I guess!!!! Mine were rattling. Took it off cleaned and painted up hammerite black and fitted with newbolts to my janspeed decat at the time, I think I still have them somewhere in the garage, have different exhaust system know etc! Leave it off if you can't be bothered with
