Gearbox query

I need to replace my gearbox in my 97 1.3 but the Haynes manual seems to indiate there are two posibilities - early or late.

In the manual the age of mine would suggest it should have the early type that needs to be filled up through the speedo drive. However I found a 1/4" drive filler plug on the front which as far the Haynes manual is concerned means it is the later type.

Does anyone know how to determine the difference between the two and if I go to buy a replacement from a breakers how will I be able to tell if I have the correct one. I do not want to take the old one out and find I have got the wrong box.

do you realise you've asked this question 3 times now!
i've replied in one of your other threads that any 1.3 g/box will fit.
and i think only the 1.0 box was minus the front filler plug, although i could be wrong, and it's 3/8.
