Fuel meter not working.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have a 1996 nissan march for the japanese market. I recently had to change the fuel pump (over the weekend) and now it seems as though my fuel meter is not reading correctly. The other day I ran out of gas on a hill and it was reading half tank. Today I was watching it and when i am ascending an incline the meter goes to the 1/4 mark and when I was going downhill the meter went back to half way.

Where is the fuel sensor located and how easy is it to replace one?

I realised the mechanic left the fuel pump floating in the tank (it is in some sort of plastic housing) but it is not attached to a side .. is this normal?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I think there are two different Japanese fuel level senders, with different resistance ranges.
When I swapped instrument binnacles I observed a similar problem.
The fuel level sender is mounted with the fuel pump.
If you swapped pumps, you probably also swapped senders.

Thanks for the reply nz aj.

So does that mean I need to purchase an original nissan fuel pump for my fuel levels to be correct?
