Fuel gauge

Hi. How come my fuel gauge can't make its mind up how petrol I have in the tank. When I stop driving it goes up a lot. Is this right. Thanks

Hello car nut. Yes mate, get used to your gauge telling you porkies all the time....the gauge is female - can't make its mind up.

I believe the fuel gauge dial is dampened by some viscous mechanism which can sometimes bind/stick over the years.

I took the clear cover off my dash and twirled the fuel needle round n round to work loosen the dampener whilst IGN was on, then release the needle near the middle of the gauge and it just twanged into place before the viscous damper resolidified.
