how do I change the repeator properly do I need to take the front sides off?

should just pull the wire connector off, remove the bulb, replace and reconnect the wiring..

Invest in a haynes manual!

I have changed the bulb and colour of it just its on using the old connector, the new one came with different connectors and I do have a haynes manual.

Take the wheel arch liner off to gain access to the repeater plug connector.

is that a easy/safe job for me to do myself?

it's a doddle, it's only 5 crosshead screws I think to take the entire liner out, but you only need to remove the rear half of it and push it aside to reach the plug.

the liner is flexible plastic, you'll be hard pushed to break it.
