faulty ignition barrel?

hi there, just new to this whole forum thing! hope i am doing it right. i have an intermittent starting fault with my micra, it can happen any time and is not dependant on engine temp or outside weather conditions/temperature. sometimes when i try to start the car it starts no problem but when i let the ignition key return to the run position the engine immediatley dies, it is just pot luck wether the engine keeps running after i let the key go! to me it might be a faulty ignition barrel as once it has started it runs well and doesnt stop until i switch the engine off any ideas thanks

Mine does this.
After starting the engine just keep a bit of pressure (clockwise) on the key in the ON position not the START.
