engaging 2nd gear

hey guys i have a bit of a problem.

just recently i've started to notice a very very light crunching sound as i engage 2nd gear, it is fine in all the others.
this mainly is when the engine temperature is cold.

also, if i change higher up the rev range, say 3000rpm, it doesn't seem to make the noise. fwn
i think i might need to change the gearbox oil, is that correct?

thanks, david.

I had that in 2nd and 4th, I sold the car quickly as possible cos I thought the gearbox was on the way out, change the oil, if it's still the same then sell sell sell lol

It's the syncromesh that is worn.

I changed the oil on my box and it can make the problem worse by speeding up the gear-change, although I did feel it was worth it for the improvement in change on the other gears.

Just be a little slower with any changes into second (gives the syncro ring more time) and it will be fine, mine is noisy if I'm not slow with, but OK when slow.

it sounds like a worn syncro to me ? new oil "might " help, but that stuff is,nt cheap  (i use engine oil, but i dont advise doing that tho :))

jesus that was a quick response! thanks guys.

is it a gearbox out job to replace the oil?
oh and how hard is it to replace the synchromesh?

i'll just replace it myself with the help of my brother whos a mechanic, but we're barely on talking terms right now haha..

a syncro repair is a specialist job really dave, you could drain out a spoonful of oil to check its condition, but if its still clean then i would just live with it personally :) (and fit another g/box if it gets worse)
