Dust cover on front strut: remove/replace??

Figured out the unearthly noise from the front when changing gear, going over bumps. Turns out a dust cover on the NSF strut has come loose and is banging around. When the car has been sitting for a while it seems to re-seat itself but then comes loose. Do I need these or can I just have them both taken out? Figure the MOT guy is not going to like the sound it makes...Can't find any replacements on line.

Thank you!

Dust covers are there for a reason, remove them if the MOT bloke thinks it's ok just to be on the safe side.

Are your rebounds made from sponge as it sounds like they're crumbling.

Cheap to replace, sponge or rubber.

Thank you. Complete mechanical ignoramus here. Are the rebounds part of the strut assembly or are they separate units within the strut tower? Where would I go about finding them (I'm not having much luck with breakers. Couple I spoke to said that K10s go straight to the crusher.)

They are separate parts, easy to acquire, either from your local Nissan dealer or from the Net.

3 types of rebound:
Rubber
Expanded foam
Sponge (usually reddish in colour - original spec) these soak up road grime etc and fall to bits.

you can see what happens to the sponge ones below. Left hand side of pic

If you want solid rubber ones then Camskill do a KYB kit which includes rebound rubber and cover for about £15

I'm always shocked to see a K10 going to the scrappy.

That is most helpful and I have contacted them to see if they have it. Might also replace the shocks at the front, too. 40k miles on the originals, time for the old girl to have a new set I reckon.

The K10 is disappearing at a fast rate. Incredible. They used to be everywhere. Guess the scrapping scheme helped send a lot of them off to the yard.

Glad to be of assistance :)

The K10 is quite elusive at first but you'll be surprised just how many K10 models are left, if you keep a look out for them they just seem to turn up. There are about 15 in my area and keep seeing others on a daily basis. Some of them are in better condition than some 5 year old cars.

I'm going to try and arrange a photo shoot sometime, that'll be a laugh trying to get all those together! lol!

Good luck with the job (Y)
