Driving lamps not working

AIUI, the driving lamps on my newly acquired N-plate Super S should come on with the main beam - firstly, am I right, or am I being a nugget?
As they don't, where's the first place to check? I know how to check for a broken fuse, but not a relay... is there anywhere they're known to break the wires etc?

relay is in engine bay. switch on lights then get someone to put main beam on and see if you feel it click on or not.
