Does Cataclean work?

Hi all, first off I am a beginner at this so any help is greatly appreciated. My 2008 bog standard 1.4 K12 has only just passed its MOT with its emissions. The mechanic who passed it said it wouldn't pass next year. I forgot to ask if there was anything I could to to rectify this, the resident pub mechanic said run some Cataclean through it, I would like your expert opinion first please. Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Drive the pants off it for a few days before the MOT, the Cat wants to get really really hot to clear the coke deposits sat on the plates.

I guess for 15 quid it can't do more harm than good, so might as well chuck it through, but don't expect miracles.
