DIY vs Mechanics

Hey Guys,

Got a few questions

I don't have a background in cars (it only sparked an interest when i came upon the k11), nor have a private garage to set the car up, though i do have an open parking lot, but i don't trust the folks in this block..

Some things i would like to change are the typical - lowered suspension, 13"/14" wheels, and possibly a few turbo mods for an extra kick.

Wondering, how hard would it be to set up the car and how long would it take?
or
Do you reckon, it be better off taking it to a mechanics? and how much would that set back com[ared to doing it myself.

a few turbo mods?!

nah mate.

you cant do it yourself. you need quite a lot of knowledge, and with out that knowledge, if you take it to a fabricator/engineer to "put a few turbo mods on it" they are going to rape your wallet, film it then give it a facial.

find someone on here close, with a bit of how too knowledge, pay them and beer and get them to help you with the basics.

Yeah leave turbo to the experts. Best case scenario you'll get it all together, think its running well and then blow your engine within 1000km because of a dud tune setting.

Suspension etc yeah sure, no worries, you can do it with jackstands and basic hand tools plus a bit of knowledge. Same goes for basic engine mods like extractors, camshafts, intake, etc.

If I wouldn't be touching extractors nor camshafts on little to no knowledge!

Your best bet SU89 do some forum searching on here get a mate who is mechanically minded and who fiddles with cars on the regular, learn some knowledge off him. Any engine performance work leave to a shop but do your research so you know what job of idea you have when you down this path. Also learn by doing your own servicing and brakes

Yer diy is the best, but stick to the kiss theory "keep it simple stupid". And buy a Haynes manual.

As said before learn simple stuff like changing oils, wheels, brake pads. If you know how to weld changing a muffler is fun. I would avoid changing springs unless you have someone that knows what there doing to help.

Here's a list of easy parts to change, and will make your car more sporty.

Wheels.
Steering wheel/gearstick knob.
Rear muffler.
Air filter.
CD player and speakers, need basic electrical knowledge.
Gauges like a tachometer.
Seatcovers, paint bits, better headlight globes, Bunning's garden edging as a front lip.
And lots more if you have a look around.

meh, only one way to learn mate! get your hands dirty, pull **** apart and learn how it goes back together, as for tuning and turbos and ****, steer clear of the computer, find someone you trust for that one, but find "bolt ons" and bolt em on man
