Damp smell/wet dog

I have a slight problem with the smell inside my car, I'm pretty sure the people i bought it off had a dog as there was hair all over the back seats, i have hoovered and completely cleaned the car inside (myself) but the smell is still there. It has started making my clothes smell when i get in the car and not making it an enjoyable experience to drive.
I'm not sure if the smell is wet dog, or damp. i can't find any water leaking in, however the smell gets worse after bad weather...
does anyone have any idea?
how do i get rid of the smell? should i get it professionally valeted or will that not do much?

Check the sound insulation beneath the carpet under the dash. If you have water leaking in under the scuttle it can get damp and smelly, and the carpet may still appear perfectly dry.

I had esactly the same with mine like Andy said check under the carpet and just dry it out mine smelt like a wet dog had died in the car.... X
