connect ipod to factory cd player

Hi,
I have bought an xcarlink iPod unit and plugged it into the back of my k12 Micra standard stereo.There is no life on the iPod when i switch on and no way to select it.The src button will only change from internal cd to radio.Does anybody know if this is even possible?
