the cd unit most likely plays recorded cd's, recordables are normally a mystery as many if not all players have issues playing unfinished cd's

It will play WMP files and not MP3, so convert them before you burn them onto a CD. and because WMP files are much larger in size dont expect to fit much onto one CD.

It is better connecting a MP3 player to the standard stereo via FM transmitter or change head unit for bigger capacity.

If it doesn't play recordables burn them at a slower speed, my stereo doesn't like 48x but is ok with 20x

Also try different discs, sometimes the silver ones (burn side) perform better than blue ones.

Or just stick to 'audio graded' discs (if you can find them), and as suggested above use a very low burn speed, even down to say 2x.
