Can't get into any gear

I have a 1998 Nissan Micra 1.0L with about 66000 miles on it. I just drove to the shops and when got back in the car, it started up fine however when I went to put it into gear it would not go. Any attemppts to put it in to any gear (including reverse) result in a fine pitched grinding noise that isn't very loud however I suspect it would be much worse If I were to force it into gear. In neutral the car is pushable easily so it does not look like the gearbox is jammed. It has never mande any whiny or suspicious noises in the past. Does anyone have any idea of what the problem could be. Thankyou

sounds like a clutch problem to me, have you tried starting it in gear with the clutch down ?

sounds like the clutch cable needs tightening up
