Can someone please tell me what the coil packs do?

Hi there,

2004 Nissan Micra 1.2 se 115k miles
Car is in garage because it keeps jerking/losing power and then dies, I've got a post on the general discussion page but have had no replies.
Mechanic says it could be the coil pack? Except me and my dad have no idea what that is/does?

My thoughts was that the overall problem could have been a fuel filter?
Any suggestions on what to try first?

it transforms the 12v to high voltage for the sparkplug momen, has the timing chain tensioner been checked ?

No its not been checked but dad is sure its not the timing chain tensioner

because the chain does,nt rattle ?

Yeah, he's a car trader for 30 years, he would know if it was the chain etc i was surprised he didn't know what the coil pack was

the k12 chains dont get a chance to rattle tho, its a crank/cam sensor sync issue instead
