Does the mechanism which operates the convertible roof need routine maintenance, and if so, what? The subject is not referred to in the handbook, and I'd rather keep it maintained than suddenly fail with the roof half closed!

yes.
spray grease on all moving joints and the locking mechanism.
the hydraulic system is closed loop, don't touch it unless it leaks, there is a fluid check, but it's involved and could lead to other issues.

also worth cleaning out all the seal drains (front and rear pillar) on a routine basis, otherwise water enters the cabin (ask me how I know).
