There is a lot of really crap plugs around now, depending on where a lot are made, even some of the NGK are below average, I only ever buy the single boxed NGK's still made in Japan.
Oh and multi tip plugs were used to correct running issues in some cars, like rotaries 'needed' them, and random cars over the years used them from factory to get around tuning situations.
As an example, the first of the Spanish build Barinas came with them from the factory, I kid you not that when replaced with normal plugs, the cars lost a few HP, those were the NGK tripples though, where were a 'very' good plug.
