Apexi Vs. K & N

Katie

Half Micra Half Primera
I want a new air filter, and having previous experience of Apexi im leaning towards one of those, if they are in fact do-able on a micra, i havent got so far as in to actually looking ……

All the micra ones ive found seem to be K&N.

Ive been put off K&N as they have such a bad track record for messing up the MAF which is really making me hesitant on putting one on my K11.

Can someone put my mind at ease about K&N and maybe some pointers for which one to buy / fitting?

Lots of people use K&N filters on there micras without any problems. Are you looking at a filter for the air box, or an induction kit?

Im quite undecided yet to be honest, the whole K&N thing is putting me off looking in to it but id have preferred an induction kit

i used k and N on my micra for years and have nothing but good experiances with them, in most tests they come out near the top but nothing beats an apexi filter without going silly money.

I ran KN for years on all my K11s . Never had a problem. heard bad thigns about Pipercross filters though.

imo all filters are the same and do the same job...i have a cheao universal jobbie and hasnt had any problems yet its been on for about 2years nearly! i carnt see there beeing a grate deal of diffrance in the apexi or k&n, bar the fact the apexi cost more! its upto you at the end of the day...a nice uprated panel filter would do nicely, also should be better for power gian than an exposed filter....

you could how ever get an air box of a 1.6 nissan or a 1.4...then put an uprated panel filter in there....should be loads better with the 1.6 and 1.4 boxs beeing twice the size as the micra one! although i think one has a resanatior box in, think its the 1.4 air box...other than that there the exaclty identical!

K&N are old skool and not designed for new engines, on a carb system they are good but on a new car I'd choose sommat more up to date.

they werent designed for old engine either :p i know if you put one on a mk1 escort it used to cut out...they carnt be that bad if they still make them.

Yeah but you gotta admit the K&N technology is kinda dated,
I bought a K&N imitation one for a bike, it isn't oiled and is a fine metal mesh so that kinda thing would be alright with a MAF.

Well with 'new' foam filters that allow a higher airflow etc there isn't much use for the restictive oil soaked cotton approach.

If you feel an Apexi filter is warranted then get one, it's your piece of mind. Personally I have had a K&N on my K11 for around 6years and it's never caused any problems MAF wise and always reassuringly black on the outside and 'visibly' clean and red on the inside.

Oiled filters have been attributed to covering the hotwire with a film of oil but I feel that would only really happen in instances of people refitting a freshly re-oiled filter immediately after cleaning......thus not following the cleaning instructions enclosed with the filter.

This is true but the filters come readily oiled which in some instances have messed up the maf, simple solution though! Clean the maf with some brake cleaner, wouldn't recommend carb cleaner as it contains small amounts of lubricants.

on 2 previous cars i've had k&n filters, no problems at all. also had an apexi.

over 4 years and on 2 different mr2 turbos i had a metal blitz filter for about 6 months, then ran the k&n for 3 1/2 years no problems at all.

the other mr2 turbo ran an apexi with no problems at all.

a k&n also ran fine on my old ax gt for the best part of a year

so no problems with them for me
