Airlock in coolant system?

Hi :) I just bought a 1995 1.0 T11 for my daughter. It has a few niggly problems, most of which are easily fixed. However, it also has a bit of an overheating problem.

It doesnt seem to overheat while idling at all, it only seems to happen when the car is being driven - but within minutes of starting off the temp gauge goes through the roof - waaaay past the red. There's plenty of fluid in the coolant system, but I get the feeling its not moving around effectively. Would an airlock cause this rapid overheating? What else could be causing the temperature to rise so suddenly when driving?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a seized thermostat?

I'm not sure if these engines have bleed nipples but I removed my rad cap at the front (not the overflow bottle) filled it and squeezed the pipes with the engine on till they were both getting warm.

A quick drive just to make sure there was no temp problems :)
