» CMF MemberWe all take new cars for test drives from time to time. Most if not all dealers have you sign a form which says you accept the liability to pay the insurance excess in the event of an accident if you were at fault or the cost could not be recovered otherwise.
These excesses can be quite high often over $1,500, sometimes more, do you read the fine print or ask what the excess is??
Now you may be careful so you don't have to worry having an accident. BUT, picture this, you get involved in an accident (not your fault) but in which the driver of the other car was unlicensed AND the other car was unregistered and therefore uninsured.
If that other driver was a deadbeat and in that scenario probably was, then they might not be able to "make a successful claim" for the insurance excess which then means it defaults to you.
I was told by a dealer that this excess does not apply if they have a salesperson in the car with you. Worth checking.
