lightened flywheel

Hi Pol,

I have a Jun lightweight flywheel fitted to my car. I can confirm it's a worthwhile upgrade and improves the reponsiveness of the motor. I didn't detect any change in fuel economy. I would recommend buying a complete replacement lightweight flywheel (about $450 from www.perfectrun.com.au)rather than trying to lighten the factory one.

Don't bother lightening the factory one - just grab the JUN item like makes has said.

There's been entire threads about the whole thing about it decreasing fuel consumption. Bottom line from memory was that while it may possibly help reduce it while accelerating, the savings would be negligable. People on here i'm pretty sure don't buy a lightweight F/W to save fuel.. I know that's not why I bought mine.

You can take some decent weight off the factory flywheel because it is a 2 piece setup and the friction surface isnt actually what holds it all together. But in saying that you can't get the weight off it where it needs to come off (the outer edges).

better off buying a decent chromoloy job.

"so to say .. its not that practical compared to the 4.3kg? any comments guys? "</div>

the lighter, the better. imo

Charlotte's new owner supplied me with the Jun ultralight flywheel to put in when doing the gearbox. These things really transform the car.

My mechanic questioned going so light—but not after putting it in! He was astounded at the difference it made. So was I.

Go light, Farken great mod for the micra :)

Hey pol,

as littlebear said, I ordered the 3.6kg JUN flywheel from <a href="http://www.perfectrun.com.au">PerfectRun.com.au</a>. They were pretty good with their pricing, postage and service, very quick with replying to emails etc. It seems that they are simply a middle man in that they do not have the items in stock. In this way, prices for the items and the postage vary with the exchange rate.

It worked out that the flywheel cost me around AU$390, postage was around AU$80. It arrived within 6 days, Japan to Adelaide.

It really is a great mod. Some people make the comment that you will have problems with the lack of engine inertia to help keep idle or to prevent stalling when launching when installing somthing so light. But I have not had this trouble, it is great. So much better engine response, the micra just wants to rev and get the car going. I guess the only problem is now that I am wanting to race everything, so for the moment fuel economy is probably not the best until the novelty wears off. I'll need to do a couple of test runs agains my sister in her stock standard LX.

Here are a couple comparison photos. As you can see, if you were going to try and lighten the factory flywheel, you've got a lot of work to do...

Standard (I think 8.6kg) Flywheel:

<img src="http://w7er8q.bay.livefilestore.com...hTIwGI2SdrPrfc1fifAvT3Zo-T9IbaXI0ObIkqv4JXmeU" width="640" height="480">[/img]

JUN 3.6kg Ultra-Lightweight Flywheel:

<img src="http://wdyetg.bay.livefilestore.com...7NfcNFhEoPH4jDlmAKS2UfBbqwzFKUkPiUq9rQulHkbsk" width="640" height="480">[/img]

<img src="http://wdyetg.bay.livefilestore.com...Iw6Es68aklDvF5lr29ZohCzkqUD3zUMA-sYO_x7KOo6Mo" width="640" height="480">[/img]

As an example, <a href="http://www.cypherindustries.com.au/products.php?cat=drivetrain" target="_blank">these guys</a> recon that the difference in acceleration experienced in 1st gear for every 1kg removed from the flywheel is like removing 30kg from the weight of the car.

SO the Ultra-Lightweight JUN item is 5kgs lighter than standard, and is supposedly like taking your stock standard 850kg micra down to 700kgs. I really do not know how much truth there is to this, but it'd be interesting to be able to test it.

a 1.3 with a 4kg 1.0 f/w is easy to lighten tho, and the early 1.0 g/box is about 2/3,s the weight

For comparisons... make sure youse do the same thing... like 3gear @40kph so there is no driver involvement... 4 me I took only 1.5 kg of my stock fly and improved 0-100 times by 1.5 sec....

"I got our standard flywheel machined, it is about 4.6kg's from memory"</div>

Mine and GTRHOLIC's were at least double that.

Yeah the stock flywheel for the CG13 at least is 9KG. Surely you didn't machine off half the weight from it..?
