2025-10-30 Weld Rear Corner Rust

To repair the rust hole above the fuel filler pipe I first need to drain the tank

IMG_20251030_122646.jpg

Syphoned out 7.5L (just as the low fuel light appeared)

IMG_20251030_122548.jpg

Tank has tiny little specks of dirt (not as much as last February)

IMG_20251030_123220.jpg

Filling up at local morrisons for the past few months still contains some black debris but not as much as when I used to fill with tesco fuel 👀

With fuel drained I can remove the filler pipe for better access to the rust area

IMG_20251030_161002.jpg

Wirebrushed the surface rust off this area

IMG_20251030_163449.jpg

Gave the stainless pipe a quick polish too 😁

Chopped this triangle section out

Next day I'll be welding a new section in and repaint it with polyurethane coat before tackling the other rust hole in the wheel well

2025-11-05 Lidl Powerbank / Compressor

My old tyre pump was worn out with cracked rubber hoses and saw Lidl selling this 4in1 powerbank/jump starter/light/digital tyre pump for £45 which seems really handy for kassandra

Works gr8 at conveniently & quickly pumping the tyres upto the target pressure before turning off automatically, plus it doesn't need plugging into the car (no hassle with wires) and no need to run the engine

IMG_20251105_165526.jpg

ofc I was curious to inspect the insides 😅

I finally added some rubber cushions on the garage walls to protect the door edges

These old bosch super plus wuper blades I brought from halfords has lasted 2yrs and now starting to smear, which lasted twice as long as all previous cheap ones, so I replaced them with a new set

2025-11-06 Prep Peugeot 307 for MOT

With the peugeots MOT coming up, I checked over the car.

The plastic headlight covers were a little faded over so I sanded with 1200 & 2500 before buffing with G3 & polish

Wirebrushed the decades of caked brake dust off the wheels

The only tiny thing to fix is a rust hole in the inner rear sill

2025-11-07 Weld Peugeot Sills & Boot Floor

Wirebrushing the rear left sills reveal more holes as a result from years of parking outside the house with the car leaning to the left & rear 👀

2025-11-10 Replace Peugeot 307 Spark Plugs & MOT

With the MOT coming up & the old plugs slightly worn, I ordered a fresh set of NGK LFR6B on ebay for £12.80

IMG_20251110_191552.jpg

New plugs are gapped too tight at 0.8mm so I adjusted them to the oem 0.9mm and quickly swapped them over in the morning while it stopped raining before heading off to work.

With fresh plugs, the cold engine fires up much faster

IMG_20251111_070723.jpg

Inspecting the old plugs, they're in the perfect heat range

Next day the Peugeot went for it's MOT and passed with zero issues 🥳😇

2025-11-12 Washing With Rain Water

In my new garage roofing, all the rain water collects & drains into these three 45L bins I recently added, which can be used around the house to save water (ie water the plants, flush toilets, wash cars etc)

IMG_20251024_155326.jpg

Usually I wash the cars with a garden hose but today I decided to wash kassandra with the 3 bucket method using the 130L of free rain water collected from last nights heavy rainfall

IMG_20251112_140015.jpg

& the result of using fresh rain water compared to "hard tap water" is no more streaks or dried water spots on the glass or paint 😎
I should've done this yrs ago 😅

Many thanks for the reminder.

In 51 years driving, I never thought of harvesting rainwater until I got a water meter to save about £400 a year off my water bill. "D'oh!"

Wrote it off to experience, hey ho.

Wow that's a huge saving.

My family house has been paying a fixed rate £400 per year for unmetered water (cos it used to be a takeaway shop) but this year it shot up to £500 😬😥

Debating whether to have metered water in hopes of saving money incase we've use less water than estimated by the standard fixed charge, but my sister said best try stay unmetered cos her metered water bills for just 2ppl is alot higher than ours 👀

My metered water bill is now around £300 a year (just me in the house), like everyone it has almost doubled in cost over the last few years, also more than 50% of my bill is surface water drainage, even though the house was built with no surface water entering the drains, there's nothing I can do about that unless I have an industry standard and inspected (every year) soak-away fitted, even then they still charge you for the drainage on the roads, well at least here they do.
My yearly consumption is around 24 meters/squared, and with the fresh and dirty water being under 50% of my bill there's limited scope for me to have much impact on my bill, I'm already considered a very low user, so I can see higher consumption households being worse off with a meter.

Yeah me mom & dad live in two joined terraced houses and our sewage charge is about 56% of the bill.
For the past few years both the supply & drainage has been rising £10/yr but in 2025 they suddenly shot up by £50 🫣

So if you're paying approx £150 for light consumption of metered water yourself whereas I'm paying like £200 unmetered water for 3 of us
(we're probably medium consumption cos mom waters lots of plants around the house daily, we shower/bath daily & me washing both cars occasionally. all of which the collected rain water system will help with)
I think it's safer to stay unmetered inho 😅

2025-11-13 Fix Peugeot 307 Leaking Boot Handle

It's been raining hard overnight and once again this morning there's a little pool of water in the spare wheel well

IMG_20251113_105910.jpg

IMG_20251113_114319.jpg

According to this Peugeot forum post, it's a very common issue with leaking past the boot handle
https://www.peugeotforums.com/threads/307-boot-leak-fix.208666/

And looking at mine, yup it's leaking past the handle/switch.
Both 10mm nuts were also abit loose?
I'm thinking 20yrs of yanking the boot handle up has gradually loosened these 2 unsecure nuts until the old gasket was too loose to seal

IMG_20251113_105933.jpg

Also just look at this silly paper-thin rubber gasket, no wonder it leaked

IMG_20251113_110448.jpg

Not much rubber material at the top/bottom to keep rain away from the openings. It's also been crushed down to a wafer-thin 0.20mm 🤏

IMG_20251113_111020.jpg

IMG_20251113_111929.jpg

Made a new bigger gasket out of some Marygold glove which was 0.4mm thick 🤪

IMG_20251113_113021.jpg

IMG_20251113_112924.jpg

Also added a smear of grease to further seal around the gaps and keep it dry from now on 🤞

In Devon unmetered domestic water charges were & are related & proportional to the old rateable values/council tax rates inflation adjusted.

Bigger or more valuable domestic homes come with higher fixed price unmetered water charges?

With a water meter I can control consumption too minimise charges & have made big savings compared to what I was paying with fixed unmetered water rates.

I note you state your family home was a trade take away business & thus may still be subject to trade water rates & that a domestic tariff water meter may achieve a cost saving?

Domestic water meter installation was free of charge & I could kick myself for not doing it years ago. "D'oh!"

Good luck. ;)
